Teaching history in Europe

The concepts of ‘nation’ and ‘national identity’ have assumed in Europe a peculiarly strong meaning, still influencing its political configuration. The historical processes that led to the formation of a Nation-State have common traits in every European country, together with certain characteristics that are country-specific. The definitions of “nation” and of “national identity” also evolved in time.

By taking part in Learning@Europe, students gain a deeper understanding of their own national identity, and basic information about the development of other identities across Europe: this is an absolute novelty to most of them, since the history curriculum in European schools generally lack international and comparative dimensions/perspective. Learning@Europe leads students – the European citizens of tomorrow – to the discovery of their common roots, at the same time valorizing the richness of their different traditions and cultures.

Learning@Europe has the ambitious goal of teaching history within a European perspective, thus hopefully stimulating a long-term revision in the history curriculum of the European countries.

“L@E is not about teaching students in a theoretical way that they are different or similar: it is about SHOWING them why! It does not tell students that they must feel European: it shows them that they ARE.”
(L@E expert, Poland)
